Toyota Canada announced today it will be temporarily suspending production in North American factories as a result of the March 11 earthquake in Japan.
All North American vehicle plants will operate on reduced schedules, and production will be suspended on April 15, 18, 21 and 25. Most engine and component factories will follow suit. It seems like more non-production days are a possibility, but Toyota is saying future production plans will be determined later.
The company made clear though that it will not lay off employees. Workers will be able to report to work for training or plant improvement, and still receive pay.
The 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan continues to affect domestic and international automakers as well as other industries.
