I saw this and wasn't surprised. They are trying to protect an image that unfortunately many people in mainstream America hold onto so dearly. I recall hearing people being angry for see Arabs dancing in the street after 9/11. Now we, America have people dancing in the street after OBL death. How are we different? Are we really that more sophisticated and enlightened because of our iPad's and $5,000 dollar toilets? Huxley was right, give the people a distraction and watch them fall.
For some, waiving a made in China US Flag, playing country music and cheering death is something to be proud about. That it somehow makes you patriotic. Mendenhall asked a moral question that any soul would ask. ""What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side..."
Has anyone read "All Quiet on the Western Front" Do you remember when the main character was in the fighting hole with his smitten enemy and he goes through his wallet and says something to the effect of, "It's a shame we are fighting one another. We both have children and wives who love us. We both fight for the same things and yet, here we are fighting each other. If only the circumstances were different maybe we would be friends" Death begets death. And hate breeds more hate.
I had this discussion with a man from Kuwait while I spent time in Bahrain. He and I although world's apart were able to be see eye to eye, in an empathic fashion. For one night, we were good friends talking about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. He had even offered to buy me entertainment! (I respectfully declined) People are people. We were taught this was the enemy and all I found was a man who wanted what I did. To be happy.
Maybe we need a little bit more love and empathy. I wonder what the world would be like if we were put into anothers shoes for even a moment. The rich feeling poor. The violent, feeling the love of a good family. How would that change people? Society?
I hope this Mendenhall takes his endorsement and laughs it off. I won't buy champion products any more. What they did was unnecessary. If they didn't want him to talk politics they should have made that explicitly clear. I'm sure that if you follow the money, there are some C-Level execs at that company who donate to political campaigns. Mea culpa?

Great movie "All Quiet On The Western Front" ... IIRC, the movie ends as the young male protagonist reaches to caress a butterfly just outside his foxhole and gets shot. Highly recommend it. Great allegorical lessons to be found in it.

If you recommend it to people, does it make sense to tell them the ending? :( At least say there is a spoiler in your post :p
