I have city water where I live here in Florida and we all know how bad treated water is for you. I used to have a well at the last house I lived at and the water was absolutely pure. I came across this site on how to drill or bore your own well. Of course I dont think it would be so easy if you live somewhere that has a lot of rocks in the ground. But if you live somewhere where it is sandy or have clay, then this is the way to go. And a handpump would be handy to have in the event of not having power.

Well in certain parts of the US you only own the surface of the ground you live on and you have no 'right' to drill wells, plus there could be mines underneath you! And if you did anyway and hit water, it could be contaminated with heavy metals. In some countries like Mexico where water is rare, water 'belongs' to the government and one cannot drill wells without special permits which are hard to get.

Collecting and storing rainwater in cisterns using gutter systems on buildings is also an option.

I do rainwater collection and my water comes from a municipal well. The problem with rainwater is that there is very little rain in the spring and summer. I've been testing it with gardening and 120 gallons (2 large buckets) really lasts a while. I may end up getting two more buckets for 240 gallons total capacity.

I do live close to a number of lakes and streams, so in the worst case scenario I could always haul some water :-)
