An Israeli algorithm sheds light on the Bible

Software developed by an Israeli team is giving intriguing new hints about what researchers believe to be the multiple hands that wrote the Bible.

The new software analyzes style and word choices to distinguish parts of a single text written by different authors, and when applied to the Bible its algorithm teased out distinct writerly voices in the holy book.

Scholars have long known the Bible is a compliation of texts by a number of authors based upon linguistic analysis. A computerized analysis was not necessary. Needless to say the editors who redacted much of the Essene material in the employ of the Nicene Council so long ago had particular eclesiastical motives, i.e. expunging any trace of any oriental doctrine such as reincarnation that would disempower the priesthood and the Church. In addition as has often been pointed out, many sections of the Old Testament or the Pentateuch were, as it turns out, derived from much earlier Sumerian Tales, i.e. the Flood Story, etc.

The Bible is an interesting document but cannot be regarded as pure history because of the many edits and authors. Like most other literature it reflects as much about its authors and their beliefs and values as it conveys cold facts about our human past.

Even so, there are many congruencies between major themes and stories in the Bible and other so-called religious myths and stories from around the globe.

As Giorgio De Santillana and Hertha Von Deschend pointed out in their magesterial work HAMLET'S MILL, this may not just be a mere coincidence.

The trident is associated with Poseidon, Neptune, Shiva. When the Christian religionists came to fruition they subverted the meaning of the trident and associated it with Satan. For what its worth, Krishna and Christ share similar stories (e.g. immaculate conception).

I would like to see any computer program try to analyze what we say here on Nexus. If we brilliant humans are having a heck of a time, what chance does a "program" have which is 1,000,000 times as limited in "insight" than the human mind?

I think such a "program" is insane. Authors thousands of years ago didn't have spell check and supply stores handy, much less were able to just write in one sitting without a war or who knows what going on. Of course writings would vary depending on the situation. This is the case with any writings in history. If we weren't there, how can we say what was? We indeed are experts in making choices based on our limited understanding.
