I think the best way to say it would be to say they spun their own history. Just like many myths may have a basis in fact, many of the details get spun, distorted, exaggerated, etc. We can see the same thing going on with the real story of what is going on in the world and how the mainstream media distorts it. His-tory is always written by the victors.
