On Friday, the Obama administration approved (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/22/business/energy-environment/bp-plan-for-gulf-drilling-is-approved.html) BP?s first plan to drill oil in the Gulf of Mexico since the April 2010 explosion that killed 11 workers at the company?s Deepwater Horizon rig.
The approval by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) came despite the fact that BP is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation and was recently cited (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/13/us/us-cites-bp-and-contractors-for-deepwater-horizon-spill.html) by the Department of the Interior for numerous safety and environmental violations in the Deepwater Horizon explosion.
