I think this is great. I won't be able to listen live this Friday though. I hope it will be recorded for later consumption. I'll have to get off my backside and get Skype going on my machine. I think this is something I'll definitely be participating it. There are times I have something to say on a topic and have been frustrated by the limitations of the writing process, where speaking about it would be SOO much better for me.

Good job.. I look forward to it.

Ohhhhhhh!, you are creating doubt now you cheeky monkey - I will check.

Time here in the UK = 5:41pm (GMT)
Time in Montreal CAN= 12:41pm (EST) - 5 hours behind GMT
Time in Austin TEX = 11:41am (CST) - 6 Hours behind GMT
Time in Los Angeles = 9:41am (PST) - 8 Hours behind GMT

Therefore: Start time of 4pm (EST) plus 5 hours = 9pm (GMT)
Therefore End time of 5pm (EST) plus 5 hours = 10pm (GMT)

So I believe my original times to be correct Vaj......unless you can enlighten me of my mistake. :dance3:

And Celine is one of the women who is speaking.....the one answering the questions.

I'm just a little concerned that this showing will be seen as a failure on our behalf. I know that the technical problem weren't from our end and I think that should be made clear.

The audio problem is Skype related, it happens more so now since Microsoft bought Skype, all you have to do is reconnect and that usually fix's the problem.

As long as the people calling in remember to use a headset and not their speakers you will avoid looping, also muting the mic when not speaking is imperative.

All in all great 1st show, looking forward to hearing more from the members :)

Grrr. I used to get that a lot when I skyped with my gaming friends from the US - the posh bit, not the billionaire bit - you made that up all by yourself :)

VajraYaya
24th February 2012, 23:16
Well, I was able to listen to most of it. It took me a bit but it kind of became apparent that the annoying woman was just yakking away to fill space, i suppose helping Celine to find her feet and not doing a very good job of it. I guess she just really isn't up on the kinds of things we talk about here or how we do so.

Suggestions: In the early days anyway there should be two people hosting the show, in case there is not a lot of call in traffic, they can move the topic forward themselves. Celine was great. I liked actually hearing the real person, same with Anchor and Gardener. Gardener - I think YOU'RE a warm fluffy blanket. I love your accent, It reminds me of my grandmother. I could listen to you all day.

In addition to a hosting team, if the show is kind of an open discussion, both people should have a list of not only topics but a list of thoughts on the topics as well as maybe some other points on them brought up in the forum. It should be enough fuel to fill an hour at least. That kind of thing is easy for me to do.

Initially it feels to me that this show will really be a public meeting of Nexus members, having a live conversation about thread or general topics, in a public place. Until maybe we can get to the point of scheduling or conducing interviews with other public or alternative figures. But I don't think this is necessary. I think there is a lot of room for it to grow and take on a life of it's own. Good work Everybody. I look forward to next week.

What I found out in this show that might be helpful to know for next week:

1) You don’t have to be a member of http://thesechangingtimezradio.ning.com/ (TCT for short)

2) You don’t need skype to listen to the show - you just go to the TCT home page.

3) If you have script blockers, you need to whitelist: ning.com, voscast.com, chatandgo.com (if you want to use the chat app, to do that you need to be a member of TCT)

4) To call into the show, or indeed to be a host you DO need skype. Their skype name is tct-calls

5) You don’t call TCT-Calls, they call you... when they do you enter into a skype chat group that is effectively the on-air conversation.

6) So if you want to call in, you need to let them know in some way to do that. I did it by being a member of the TCT and using the chat-app, or you can chat with the host who will be necessarily using skype to host the show - but they may be a bit busy!

7) If you call in with skype – as a host or a caller, you must turn off the TCT audio stream – or it feeds back into the mic. This is what happened with Celine to start with until the producer (Kat) figured it out.

8) Scott's advice about the mute button and using headsets is bang on. I think I forgot to mute a few times and laughed over Celine - tee hee.

Gardener

Ty all for the encouragement, John was having trouble connecting by skype into the convo because Katwolf didn't have the tct scype on, so I went in there mainly to support celine as mine was already set up. Then we had the voice feedback because we didn't know we should mute the radio duh! Making the mistakes drives home the learning lol

Celine did fantastic, and Katwolf was helping to keep the flow going at the start.....may we one day all be as cool as Scott.

The audio problem is Skype related, it happens more so now since Microsoft bought Skype (?)
Scott

And why you think that is Scott?

Niklas Z***str?m (the founder of Skype) was once part of the forum I was moderating, and I spoke to him many times. But I do understand that he had $8.5 Billion reasons to leave his baby over. But sometimes I wonder if he did it out of free will, he was also the founder of Kazaa (a peer-to-peer file sharing application) which he after some lawsuits from the the music and motion industry in USA fleed from.

My personal view on this: an open minded and liberty philosopher as Niklas would not freely give up his view of the opportunities that lives in internet. ?Something is rotten in the state of Denmark?. He never told me that, but I do believe!!!

Therefore I find this post from Anchor very interesting and important (thank you):

What I found out in this show that might be helpful to know for next week: (?)

But you should not really listen to me. I still have some paranoia since I left the so called ?hacker community?. But I am slowly learning to recalibrate myself? I apologize and hope you bear with me in this issues.

Just finished listening as well!

GREAT show Celine! Especially for being the first time. I like your voice! But in my opinion it could be more of you in the begining than katwolf. Not that I found katwolf dislikeable, I just got the feeling that she sometimes talked to much and was more interested to spread her points of view than to really give you the opportunity to speak.

But that just me, you and others might not think so...

Anchor and Gardener! I LOVE your voices as well, and you both said many important things in this show. Thank you!

I can't wait for next time...

Before I go to bed I must say thank you to Celine, Richard and Vaj for an excellent show on the radio. The whole thing was a real positive experience and long may it continue.

It has also been a real pleasure messing about on chat with eveyone and the sense of humour we all share has been a real eye opening event.

It has been a real pleasure from start to finish - thanks Nexian type folk - the humour is outstanding and my faith in humanity and its ability to survive adversity is replenished.

I agree, this community helps my faith in humanity tremendously. Thanks to all ye NeXian folk from me as well.

I wasn't planning on going on the show but several questions warranted it, for that I'm grateful. I enjoyed the connection. :)

Thanks Harley. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks Richard, I think you should be a regular presence too. I think it would be good for you to be more visible. I enjoyed hearing your perspective a lot. As for me, the way my life works my availability is not always dependably known so it might be difficult to plan in advance with me. It'll have to be spontaneous for the time being. Although this month looks pretty good. It was Fun, I enjoyed it.

I'm listening to this show, laughing as if I am there.

Frankly this thing is an awesome development.

I think the format of 3 people is working really really well.

Also, I would observe that less than three is unlikely to work as well.

I think more people could work if everyone was able to only speak when they have the "talking stick" - and this could work for panel type Q&A's.

I think I could quite happily sit through many hours of this stuff :)

Good job...I'm curious about something...do you use any kind of script or is it all off the cuff. either way, I'm impressed by the flow of conversation.

I have an early suggestion for your next show...How about discussing ways to access past life experience. Some of the discussion could involve the physical circumstances, family, gender identification, psychological manifestations that made up the past experience, as well as, how it might impact our current circumstances. I read something once that kind of upset me regarding this...not because of the truth or falsity but how it was asking that we view our children. I agreed with the author about us not 'owning' our children but I also felt that to not view our children as uniquely 'ours' abraded against what i consider my 'unique' relationship to my daughter. The reason it's important to me is because she represents among many other things my only concrete connection to my biological heritage. Just an idea and i wanted to sort of explain why i thought it would be interesting.

I was wondering that too - not wanting to be too boot licky but I think Celine is a natural host and keeps things flowing really well. I assume part of that success is the planning but must also be a natural or acquired skill.

Ach Der Lieber :flood:...i dunno...I will certainly text some questions though...

actually, I should because it would represent such a monumental 'spiritual' growth event for me...but I'll have to think about it. I'm very skittish when it comes to public exposure despite having been told a number of times (and even seen myself on camera) that I come off well...I'm just an inveterate chicken. Probably has something to do with a past life... :O) I always try to cast myself in a backroom role. What's interesting about that is that my daughter seems to follow that natural pattern...she and a friend have assembled a 'cast of characters' to shoot a movie and she just wants to do the filming and editing (she is very good for a 12-year old). I encouraged her to at least do a 'cameo' appearance...but i'm rambling as is my wont.

Also: prolonged sun exposure does increase the risk of deadly skin cancers and sunscreen is very important, especially for children. Skin cancer is not a conspiracy to make us buy sunscreen. That said, do pay attention to the ingredients. There is some good research on safer sunscreen ingredient choices. As a person working in public health and disease prevention, I feel motivated to share this.

I'm just going to have to agree to disagree here.

1.) The crap in the sunscreen is what gives people cancer. Not the sun. Find ONE verified and documented instance of someone in a Mediterranean country dying of skin cancer, say, pre-1960. Good luck, by the way.

2.) If you have sunscreen on, your skin won't make the vitamin D that it needs, and you will eventually get ill. If you are big on the sunscreen thing, then just limit your time in the sun. This is for normal life I'm talking about here. By all means, if you find yourself stranded in the high desert because your plane just crashed, by all means, use the sunscreen.

3.) The safest sunscreen, is no sunscreen at all. Then you KNOW there is nothing funky in it. ;) Moderation is the key here. But just remember that people used to live and work in the sun all day long.. and gee... no one died of skin cancer until MODERN times. Every one is so freaked out about sun exposure these days. The sunscreen lobby definitely did it's jobs very well. Reminds me of the story about the monkeys punishing those for things they've never experienced themselves, but have been trained to parrot. Let me see if I can find it...

Ah, yes, here we go: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Did_the_monkey_banana_and_water_spray_experiment_e ver_take_place

The Monkey Banana and Water Spray Experiment
The experiment is real (scientific study cited below). This experiment involved 5 monkeys (10 altogether, including replacements), a cage, a banana, a ladder and, an ice cold water hose.

The Experiment- Part 1
5 monkeys are locked in a cage, a banana was hung from the ceiling and a ladder was placed right underneath it.
As predicted, immediately, one of the monkeys would race towards the ladder, to grab the banana. However, as soon as he would start to climb, the researcher would spray the monkey with ice-cold water.
but here's the kicker- In addition, he would also spray the other four monkeys…

When a second monkey tried to climb the ladder, the researcher would, again, spray the monkey with ice-cold water, As well as the other four watching monkeys;
This was repeated again and again until they learned their lesson
Climbing equals scary cold water for EVERYONE so No One Climbs the ladder.

The Experiment- Part 2
Once the 5 monkeys knew the drill, the researcher replaced one of the monkeys with a new inexperienced one. As predicted, the new monkey spots the banana, and goes for the ladder. BUT, the other four monkeys, knowing the drill, jumped on the new monkey and beat him up. The beat up new guy thus Learns- NO going for the ladder and No Banana Period- without even knowing why! and also without ever being sprayed with water!

These actions get repeated with 3 more times, with a new monkey each time and ASTONISHINGLY each new monkey- who had never received the cold-water Spray himself (and didn't even know anything about it), would Join the beating up of the New guy.

This is a classic example of Mob Mentality- bystanders and outsiders uninvolved with the fight- join in 'just because'.

When the researcher replaced a third monkey, the same thing happened; likewise for the fourth until, eventually, all the monkeys had been replaced and none of the original ones are left in the cage (that had been sprayed by water).

The Experiment- Part 3
Again, a new monkey was introduced into the cage. It ran toward the ladder only to get beaten up by the others. The monkey turns with a curious face asking "why do you beat me up when I try to get the banana?"
The other four monkeys stopped and looked at each other puzzled (None of them had been sprayed and so they really had no clue why the new guy can't get the banana) but it didn't matter, it was too late, the rules had been set. And So, although they didn't know WHY, they beat up the monkey just because " that's the way we do things around here"…

Well, it seems to be true; not in the exact shape that it took here, but close enough,

Below is a quotation from the experiment, in scientific Jargon: (sources cited below)

"Stephenson (1967) trained adult male and female rhesus monkeys to avoid manipulating an object and then placed individual na?ve animals in a cage with a trained individual of the same age and sex and the object in question. In one case, a trained male actually pulled his na?ve partner away from the previously punished manipulandum during their period of interaction, whereas the other two trained males exhibited what were described as "threat facial expressions while in a fear posture" when a na?ve animal approached the manipulandum. When placed alone in the cage with the novel object, na?ve males that had been paired with trained males showed greatly reduced manipulation of the training object in comparison with controls. Unfortunately, training and testing were not carried out using a discrimination procedure so the nature of the transmitted information cannot be determined, but the data are of considerable interest."

Like the monkeys that beat everyone up and didn't even know why, because THEY'D never experienced the cold spray for themselves, we all parrot that the sun is bad for us, and we must use sunscreen.

Funny... I don't remember Mom or Dad ever using sunscreen, and neither died of skin cancer. In fact, my great aunt goes out into the sun every chance she can get. Golfs 3 times a week, and is 89 years old. Still does all her own gardening and cooking too. And she has a smart mouth on her. I bring this up because when I was visiting her once upon a time, years ago, we were all going to sit outside during a BBQ and my girlfriend protested at sitting outdoors, because she had to put sunscreen on, and I remember my auntie saying "Throw that $h!t away girl, that goop won't prevent a damn thing!" She's a firecracker that one. I love that old woman. :D

(I just did the math. She's 89 already! I need to go visit that woman soon, as I haven't seen her for a while. Not going to be around forever, after all.)

From my part of the world...

Down south here in OZ an NZ, have the highest skin cancer rates in the world…

Why?

Firstly, our ancestral backgrounds genetically come from Anglo Saxon; we do not have the evolutionary genetic skin like that of olive skinned folk or dark skinned folk.

NZ has had for decades, a wondering Ozone hole allowing in higher amounts of UV.

Oz has a serious amount of Sun with a lesser amount of Ozone damage further north but the Southern areas are on par with NZ.

OZ has the highest rates, per capita, of Surfers and beach goers than anywhere else…

However,

Sun is as natural to Human beings as is food, water and sleep and is vital we expose ourselves to it, but NOT to the point of burning…mild you can get away with but not severe and on a continued basis.

Once the skin is burnt, outer layers are destroyed and the body starts to produce Melanin….that is the tanned look, in an effort to raise the SPF rate of the skin.

The issues “down under” is a lack of being sun-smart and an illusionary idea that tanned skinned looks healthy, while it does to a degree, some tanned colour is ok, but excess tan is extremely dangerous. (Sun beds, spray tan is all about the exterior look of being healthy as is heavy tan from the sun)

Your body lets you know when you have had enough sun on your skin, if you are aware, if not then your skin will burn and that is the cause of skin ailments such as melanoma. Excess burning! Over and over, each year, tho one severe dose of extreme sunburn, in some folk, is all it takes to develop Melanoma…later down the track.

All you have to do is be smart…if out in the sun for prolonged periods, you keep covered as much as possible. It’s not rocket science…its logic.
The mass education is to “slip slop slap” slip on a shirt, slop on some sun screen and slap on a hat…

However Sunscreen is toxic and while there are some brands that have less dangerous chemicals and less Nano particulates, metals….the stuff is still toxic. If you cannot eat it, do not put it on your skin, that is the rule of thumb.

Sadly the mass education and the sunscreen business profit, makes sure that the use of sunscreen continues….example: 1 tsp. per limb minimum, so around 9-10 tsp. of sunscreen is what is recommended for the average adult, a little less for kiddies…and that is insane!

Dark skinned folk such as African, aboriginal have a natural SPF of between 300-500, while olive skinned have around 40-60 and Anglo-Saxon have around 10.
The highest rates of skin cancer are amongst…guess who?

Now, there are always those that are an exception to the rule, but even those Anglo’s at the age of 50-100 yrs. exhibit skin damaged, not necessarily cancerous but obvious damage.

Ross

Janos
11th March 2012, 22:29
Aye, correct Ross.

One must also look at what an individual's skin is like, and are you living in somewhere that mimics your ancestral homeland or not. If you are white as a loaf of bleached bread, then yea, you're going to have problems down in the southern hemisphere. It's not where you are adapted to be. Black Africans are adapted to be in the sun all day... in their climate. Just like Caucasian people are also adapted to be in the sun all day... in THEIR normal climate.

We've spread so far from our origins, and are only a plane flight away from one hell of a case of sunburn and skin damage that wouldn't normally be the case if we were in the lands of our ancestors.

Thanks for the clarity Ross. :)
