NASA Launching 5 Rockets in 5 Minutes in Sunday Night Sky Show

After a four-day delay, NASA is planning to fire off five rockets in just over five minutes late Sunday (March 18) for a mission that, if all goes well, will create glowing clouds to probe mysterious, fast-moving winds at the edge of space.

The five-rocket salvo, which is scheduled to launch Sunday night from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, forms the core of the agency's Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment, or ATREX. The unmanned rockets will release chemical tracers at about 60 miles (97 kilometers) up, allowing scientists to track high-altitude winds that can top 300 mph (483 kph).

These tracers will generate luminous milky-white clouds that should be visible to folks on the ground from parts of South Carolina up through southern New England, researchers have said (...)

Re: NASA Launching 5 Rockets in 5 Minutes in Sunday Night Sky Show

Weather Delays NASA Five Rocket Mission from Virginia03.21.12 WALLOPS ISLAND, VA ? NASA has rescheduled the launch of five suborbital sounding rockets from the Wallops Facility in Virginia as part of a study of the upper level jet stream to midnight to 3 a.m., March 22.

This morning?s launch attempt was postponed because of poor weather conditions. A significant criteria for launch to proceed is clear skies not only at Wallops but also at viewing sites in New Jersey and North Carolina. Low clouds at the launch site and in New Jersey prevented this morning?s attempt.

The Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (ATREX) will gather information needed to better understand the process responsible for the high-altitude jet stream located 60 to 65 miles above the surface of the Earth.

As part the mission, the five rockets will release a chemical tracer that will form milky, white clouds that allow scientists and the public to ?see? the winds in space. These clouds may be visible for up to 20 minutes by residents from South Carolina to southern New Hampshire and Vermont.

More information on the ATREX mission is available on the Internet at:
    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/su...ons/atrex.html
    SOURCE

The mission will be webcast beginning at 8 p.m. this evening at:

Honestly Anno, I have no idea what they up to. It all just seems strange, I am definately not buying their official explanation "The scientist and the public want to see the jetstreams in space"... oh, right, that seems very important... lets do a million dollar show just for that...

Maybe they're expecting something/someone that can't be seen without the tracer material? As you said, seems like an awful lot of effort to measure some wind, especially given that we all need as much money as possible on Earth just now.

(...)First noticed in the 1960s, the winds in this jet stream shouldn't be confused with the lower jet stream located around 30,000 feet, through which passenger jets fly and which is reported in weather forecasts. This rocket experiment is designed to gain a better understanding of the high-altitude winds and help scientists better model the electromagnetic regions of space that can damage man-made satellites and disrupt communications systems.

The experiment will also help explain how the effects of atmospheric disturbances in one part of the globe can be transported to other parts of the globe in a mere day or two.

"This area shows winds much larger than expected," says Miguel Larsen, a space scientist at Clemson University who is the principal investigator for these five rockets, known as the Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment (ATREX). "We don't yet know what we're going to see, but there is definitely something unusual going on. ATREX will help us understand the big question about what is driving these fast winds."(...)

Hmmm, if they noticed this during the 60s... why wait until now to investigate? Especially when NASA officially lack money! There is something rotten in the state of NASA

I wonder if the Black Knight satalite has activated. It's one of the least spoken about and hardest to research parts of the whole space/alien field. For those that don't know, The Black Knight is a huge satalite that they found up in orbit with no idea of who put it there or what it does. Could have been past civilisations or could be aliens, who knows. What I do know is that you hardly ever see researchers mention it, except in passing.

As for what causes these high altitude winds, how about the fact that the Earth is spinning at several thousand miles an hour and Space is still. Seems pretty obvious doesn't it. I don't buy the wind excuse at all.

Well, now... it is getting more and more interesting:

(...)For many years, suspicions have circulated around the purpose of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the US Air Force, the US Navy, the University of Alaska and DARPA. In his underground bestseller Angels Don?t Play This HAARP, author Nick Begich summarizes the evidence that suggests HAARP is involved in weather control for nefarious purposes.

Scientists at NASA have discovered ?A close link between electrical disturbances on the edge of our atmosphere and impending quakes on the ground below,? which has led to claims that earthquakes are being artificially induced as a form of modern warfare by HAARP.(...)

    In what way?

I found it interesting that these NASA rockets targeting the same place in the atmosphere/ionosphere where they earlier discovered following:

(...)On a significant number of occasions, satellites have picked up disturbances in this part of the atmosphere 100-600km above areas that have later been hit by earthquakes.

One study looked at over 100 earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.0 or larger in Taiwan over several decades. The researchers found that almost all of the earthquakes down to a depth of about 35 km were preceded by distinct electrical disturbances in the ionosphere.

The analysis was carried out by Jann-Yeng Liu, from the Center for Space and Remote Sensing Research in Chung-Li, Taiwan. (...)

If that's the case then the US could think they're a target and that'd explain the preparedness order.

Re: NASA Launching 5 Rockets in 5 Minutes in Sunday Night Sky Show

ATREX EXPERIMENT LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT SKY: Before sunrise on March 27th, sky watchers up and down the eastern seaboard of the United States witnessed a strange apparition. A quintet of milky-white plumes appeared in the night sky, twisting in the winds at the edge of space. "It was pretty unreal and very exciting to see," says eye-witness Jack Fusco, who sends this picture from Seaside Park in New Jersey:

The plumes were chemical tracers (trimethyl aluminum) deposited in the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere by five rockets launched rapid-fire from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The goal of the experiment, named ATREX (Anomalous Transport Rocket Experiment), is to study 3D turbulence in the thermosphere.

"We saw the rockets lift off and then slowly release their chemicals, creating trails in the sky," reports Alice B. of Loudoun County, Virginia. "We could also see what I assume were the rocket remnants falling back to Earth."

"Once the chemical tracers from the rockets were released, the view was amazing," adds Bryan Lauber of Frenchtown, NJ. "The tracers were extremely bright and seemed to just fall out of the sky!"(...)

    nice.

the "wind" is charged. If you happen to follow Electric universe, you will get that earth and upper atmosphere might form a form of giant capacitor. Connect those two, and you will get lightning.

What you see there are charged chemicals: false aurorae.

question is what they are looking for, some pattern in the magnetosphere Lot's of possibilities that do not get mentioned ..

I love the knowledge here I've seen the documentary 'Thunder bolts of the gods' that explains the electric universe and its a fascinating subject
