Teleportation successful - Star Trek here we come!!!

Entanglement based quantum communication over 144 km

Experimental overviewHere we report a significant step towards satellite based quantum communication by transmitting an entangled photon over a distance of 144 km between the Canary Islands of La Palma and Tenerife via an optical free-space link. The transmitted photon was received in the Optical Ground Station of the European Space Agency, and the entangled partner photon was detected locally at the transmitter. We have succeeded in establishing quantum correlations under experimental constraints and conditions characteristic for a Space-to-ground experiment.

This includes link efficiency requiring a high flux entangled photon source, atmospheric effects, active controlled compact transmitting telescope and an optical Space receiving telescope. The quantum correlations of the transmitted photons with its partner are sufficiently high to violate Bell?s inequality and are also used to generate a quantum cryptographic key. This distance exceeds all previous tests by more than one order of magnitude. The experiment fully exploits the distance limits for ground-based free-space communication, significantly longer distances can only be reached using air- or space-based platforms. The range achieved thereby demonstrates the feasibility of quantum communication in space, involving satellites or the International Space Station (ISS).

Re: Teleportation successful - Star Trek here we come!!!

This is one of the ULTIMATE inventions for me. Living in Australia, but having so much friends and family in Montreal (where I'm from) is one of my big dilemas. Spending the 20+ hrs in economy class of the plane...is a nightmare (especially with a small child, and a degree of clausterphobia...not to mention the cost). So for me teletransportation would be fabulous!...meet me for coffee, in Paris ....wouldn't want to be involved in the testing of it though...might arrive with my head attached to my bum .

Call me a skeptic but I'll only be impressed when the photon arrives before it was sent......or better still, arrives before someone even thought of sending it.

I am totally with you on this Hurritt, why is the distance a problem?!

Here is a very interesting video regarding Quantum Leap and entanglement:

you know, I think you are reading what you like to read. There were no teleportation. The photon still traversed the distance. Under seed of light, dammit. Actually, for all it is worth, it could be transported by courier.

The crux is entangled pair, that can be read. This means that other photon would change state if the other did immediately - but details on that part seems vague. How many state changes were successfully encoded and decoded .. wait, is that "none whatsoever" ? and what was the overall time the etangled pair was observed? miliseconds?

Frankly speaking, I fail to see at what point this whole experiment had anything to do with teleportation, outside PR-hype realm.

Yes, I hear you Luke. When talking about teleportation when it comes to Quantum Leap and entanglement you rarely talk about teleportation of the particles in itself, it is the teleportation of the information of one particle to the "twin" one. And if I read and understand their report correctly they succeeded in this area:

    http://homepage.univie.ac.at/rupert....d_tenerife.pdf
    http://homepage.univie.ac.at/rupert....2007-decoy.pdf

They talk about this experiment in the video I posted above with start at 38:25

    http://youtu.be/8eZqQUdWURs

Probably this is the way teleportation will work in the future (if it possible to do at larger objects that is) according to many researches of today.

Here they also talk about their first successful experiment, and I agree this is also a bit vague:

Re: Teleportation successful - Star Trek here we come!!!

That is not teleportation whatsoever, that is information transfer using medium, in this case particle. Medium, as in optical wire or radio wave.

If you understand that tangled particles are not separate objects but one object that is non-local (bi-local in this case), and thus it state changes can be coded and decoded without limit of speed of light, calling this teleporation makes no sense. No physical matter gets teleported. there is no overlapping of space. Only way Enterprise crew could use it to get on the planet would be to send shuttle down with device that had tangled pairs of ship'd data devices down, then set it up with those oh-so -common replicator device so the dna-data of the crew can be then sent down from the ship via tang-link, encoded into embryos, brought up to resemble the crew. ...... sending down ROV's that would have fly-by-tangle seems more practical than this. And more redshirt friendly.

There is no transfer of matter. only information. You cannot send people, materials, anything material via it.

It is just a telephone that needs no wire or radio wave to transfer information - which in itself opens enormous possibilities - if you will make such pair close to permanent and coding and decoding process fast. Thing is, without having another particle from same tangled bunch, you cannot snoop the transmission. Should make all the "national security" fetishists scream with righteous anger, no?

My question is, why it is being sold as teleportation, when obviously it is nothing of the kind?

True. It is not teleportation in the strict definition "transfer of matter from one point to another without traversing the physical space between them". It is more of rebuilding a new "version" of something at the destination point using entangled particles doing so. However, does it really matter what you call it? It is just a semantic definition anyway. I find it more interesting that it actually works and if it ever will be possible to use on bigger and more complex "living" materia than particles. And if it ever will work on humans, would it still be me coming out at the other end... or is the "soul" missing?!

I think the video actually explains the concept better than the web site of the researches, so I recommend watching that instead!

Ok, if you look at e.g. radio waves it is actually making a copy of the frequencies that are in the spectrum of your voice.
So a duplication of a set of frequencies. When we get the hang of it that we are actually not 'solid' matter but a bunch of frequencies
we might be able to make a copy ...

But indeed the question is did you transfer everything needed to represent another version of you ?
When you die and the soul leaves the body, it will start decaying immediately. The soul is required to keep 'you' together.

Additionally we would have to consider 2 versions:

    - copy/paste = cloning
    - cut/paste = teleportation

Re: Teleportation successful - Star Trek here we come!!!

Actually, I fail to see why cloning is needed.

First, most obvious use of entangled particles, in my opinion, would be snoop-free communication set, that would work in any place of universe without worrying about distance. FTL communication.
And explanation why you would not hear any advanced civilization on the radio.

Doctor Who, not star-trek, so to speak.

Why now and why call it teleportation? Is it that scientists are stuck in locality paradigm? or something else, like castrating technology so it will be more NSA-friendly?

EDIT:FTL: scratch even that: since tangled particle can be ANYWHERE in the universe, and I am speaking time-space here, we are talkig communication across 4D space made possible.. across any-d space actually, as long as you can place the other side of pair there. Also should make you wonder how chinese hacked pentagon computers that were not connected to net.. well, where rare elements in chips, and probably chips themselves came from? How easy it would be to introduce some tangled matter.. and then all you need is sit back and read everything that is coming through. Endless possibilities.

Also, I would not be that surprised, if our brains and cells would contain tangled elements ..
