Corporate Media Ignores Astronomical Fukushima Radiation Levels

The Kyodo News Agency reports that radiation around the hobbled Fukushima nuclear plant is 1,600 times the normal level. The astounding figure was released to the media by the International Atomic Energy Agency officials on Monday.

Data collected by an IAEA team show that radiation levels of 161 microsievert per hour have been detected in the town of Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, the officials said, according to a report posted by House of Japan.

Tests carried out by IAEA technicians in numerous locations around the plant revealed radiation levels ranging between 2 and 160 microsievert per hour, while the normal level for the area should not exceed 0.1 microsievert per hour, the Russian newsite RIA Novosti reports.

A CBS affiliate in Wisconsin also reported on the high radiation levels that will ultimately be dispersed around the world and will undoubtedly result in unprecedented health problems and premature death from cancer. Most of the corporate media, however, did not bother to report the story.

Reuters reported that there was 500 microsieverts of radiation per hour on March 18 at the site but does not explain what this means. It did not mention the 1,600 number.

Earlier in the week, nuclear energy critic and author Hirose Takashi wrote about the media effort to obfuscate the truth about Fukushima:

Japanese Infants Face Health Risk From Radiation in Tap Water

Tokyo residents should avoid giving tap water to infants after radioactive iodine was found in the city’s supply at levels twice the limit for infants, the metropolitan government said.

Iodine-131 was detected at 210 becquerel per kilogram at the Kanamachi purification plant in Tokyo’s Katsushika district, compared with a limit of 100 becquerel per kilogram for infants, the water department said in a statement today. The recommended limit for adults is 300.

Children are susceptible to radiation poisoning from iodine, which can accumulate in the thyroid and cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. The announcement sent beverage-maker stocks surging in Tokyo trading and caused panic-buying of bottled water in supermarkets.

TEPCO asks for emergency loans
Tokyo Electric Power Company has asked Japan's major banks for at least 1.5 trillion yen, or about 18 billion dollars in emergency loans.

Sources say the utility has approached Sumitomo Mitsui Bank, Mizuho Corporate, Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, and the trust bank Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking for the emergency financing.

The loans are needed to help the utility cope with the crisis at the quake-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant, and prepare for expected severe power shortages.

It was only a matter of time before someone grew a conscience, and disclosed to the world that in addition to the massive cover up currently going on with respect to the true extent of the Fukushima catastrophe, the actual plant itself, in borrowing from the BP playbook, was built in a hurried way, using cost and labor-cutting shortcuts, and the end result was a true "time bomb." Bloomberg has just released a report that if and when confirmed should lead to the prompt engagement of harakiri by the Hitachi executives responsible for this unprecedented act of treason against Japan's citizens. Quote Bloomberg: "One of the reactors in the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant may have been relying on flawed steel to hold the radiation in its core, according to an engineer who helped build its containment vessel four decades ago. Mitsuhiko Tanaka says he helped conceal a manufacturing defect in the $250 million steel vessel installed at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi No. 4 reactor while working for a unit of Hitachi Ltd. in 1974. The reactor, which Tanaka has called a “time bomb,” was shut for maintenance when the March 11 earthquake triggered a 7-meter (23-foot) tsunami that disabled cooling systems at the plant, leading to explosions and radiation leaks....“Who knows what would have happened if that reactor had been running?” Tanaka, who turned his back on the nuclear industry after the Chernobyl disaster, said in an interview last week. “I have no idea if it could withstand an earthquake like this. It’s got a faulty reactor inside.” What follows is the harrowing tale of a criminal cover up at the only reactor that luckily was empty when the catastrophe occurred. Neutron beam observed 13 times at crippled Fukushima nuke plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday it has observed a neutron beam, a kind of radioactive ray, 13 times on the premises of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after it was crippled by the massive March 11 quake-tsunami disaster.
TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear plant, said the neutron beam measured about 1.5 kilometers southwest of the plant's No. 1 and 2 reactors over three days from March 13 and is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.02 microsieverts per hour and that this is not a dangerous level.
The utility firm said it will measure uranium and plutonium, which could emit a neutron beam, as well.
In the 1999 criticality accident at a nuclear fuel processing plant run by JCO Co. in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, uranium broke apart continually in nuclear fission, causing a massive amount of neutron beams.
In the latest case at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, such a criticality accident has yet to happen.
But the measured neutron beam may be evidence that uranium and plutonium leaked from the plant's nuclear reactors and spent nuclear fuels have discharged a small amount of neutron beams through nuclear fission.

A radiation level of 100,000 counts per minute will be introduced as a new standard for decontamination, up from 6,000 counts per minute, the government said, adding that raising the bar will not endanger health'. 'The government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said the decision was made based on advice from domestic nuclear experts and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

As the number of people who want to undergo radiation checks has surged, a lack of staff and equipment for the tests and decontamination was feared.

The task force also urged the municipalities to tell residents not to take iodine preparations that prevent the absorption of radioactive iodine without expert guidance.

The intake of such preparations can help to prevent thyroid cancer but can involve side effects including allergic reactions.'

The hacker group Anonymous, known for its involvement in the Wikileaks DDoS attacks, now claims to have access to Stuxnet. Stuxnet was used to attack Iranian nuclear plants and has been called the first true cyber weapon.

Apparently the hi-tech virus or information about it was obtained by the group after they hacked security company HBGary Federal. The security company had been tracking down leaders of Anonymous and was preparing to release the names at an upcoming security conference.

It looks like they social engineered their way into Rootkit.com, a site run by Greg Hoglund co-founder of HBGary. Next got access to a tech support server used by HBGary. Compromised an insecure Web Server, then obtained credentials to the E-Mail system. They used these credentials to siphon about 50,000 company e-mails and then posted them to a public Torrent site.

Apparently the data stolen by Anonymous contained part of the Stuxnet code.

So what will they do with Stuxnet? No one knows for sure, but some think that they may try to use it against Iran. Anonymous has released a video on YouTube stating their support for the Iranian Opposition. Their target in Iran would be unsure as security researchers report the crucial code needed to attack the Iranian nuclear plants was not obtained by the Anonymous hack.

The Stuxnet code appears to be so fine tuned to take out the Iranian plant, it is hard to tell if it could be modified for any other purpose.

Time will tell what comes next, but it would appear that Anonymous has taken a much more aggressive path.
