TROJAN Warning: FBI shutdown of routers may block your net access on March 8

Millions of computer users across the world could be blocked off from the Internet as early as March 8 if the FBI follows through with plans to yank a series of servers originally installed to combat corruption.

Last year, authorities in Estonia apprehended six men believed responsible for creating a malicious computer script called the DNSChanger Trojan. Once set loose on the Web, the worm corrupted computers in upwards of 100 countries, including an estimated 500,000 in America alone. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation later stepped up by replacing the rogue Trojan with servers of their own in an attempt to remediate the damage, but the fix was only temporary. Now the FBI is expected to end use of those replacement servers as early as next month and, at that point, the Internet for millions could essentially be over.

When functioning as its creators intended, the DNSChanger Trojan infected computers and redirected users hoping to surf to certain websites to malicious ones. Traditionally, DNS, or Domain Name System, servers translate alphabetical, traditional website URLs to their actual, numeric counterpart in order to guide users across the World Wide Web. Once infected by the DNSChanger Trojan, however, websites entered into Internet browsers were hijacked to malicious servers and, in turn, directed the user to an unintended, fraudulent site.

In coordination with the arrests in Estonia, the FBI shut down the malicious DNSChanger botnet network, and, additionally, replaced them with surrogate servers to correct the problem. Those servers, however, were installed "just long enough for companies and home users to remove DNSChanger malware from their machines," according to the court order that established them. That deadline is March 8, and those surrogate servers are expected to be retired then. At that point, computers still infected with the Trojan will be essentially unable to navigate the Internet.

Who, exactly, will be affected? Security company IID (Internet Identity) believes that half of all Fortune 500 companies and more than two dozen major government entities in the US are still currently infected with the worm as of early 2012. Unless they take the proper steps to eradicate the Trojan from their systems, millions of users worldwide will be left hog-tied, helplessly attempting to navigate to nonexistent servers and, in effect, without the Web.

?At this rate, a lot of users are going to see their Internet break on March 8,? Rod Rasmussen, president and chief technology officer at Internet Identity, cautions Krebs On Security.

Currently, both the computer industry and law enforcement are working together through a coalition they?ve established called the DNSChanger Working Group. That group has been tasked with examining the options in phasing out the surrogate servers set up by the feds, but unless an alternative plan is agreed on, a great port of the Web will go dark next month.

?I?m guessing a lot more people would care at that point,? Rasmussen adds. While infected users are cautioned to correct the problem now, millions internationally are still believed to be infected. ?It certainly would be an interesting social experiment if these systems just got cut off,? he adds.

The FBI is not "shutting down the Internet", they are taking some servers offline the they set up to combat a nasty trojan horses attack on computer systems all over the world.

When those routers are taken offline only systems infected with the trojan will lose net access, so just fix it first.

How hard is it to switch operating systems? We buy a pc and it comes with microsoft systems. What do we do to set up lexus or some other system and how user friendly are they with other programs? I know, get a mac.

Dell distributed laptops with Linux installed for a while. Also laptops with Linux installed still show up at newegg.com periodically. Or, you can buy a new HD for your desktop/laptop, keep the old one with all your stuff on it - and then install a Linux system on your computer. Ubuntu is user friendly, though it's good to know a Linux techie to call on once in a while when something or other won't configure. Though that is rare. Or, yeah, get a Mac.

If you can burn an ISO to CD, you have a choice of several dozen flavors of Linux. A lot of them, you don't even have to install, just put the CD in and reboot, it will run from the CD (AKA Live CDs). Take the CD out and reboot, it will boot back into your original OS. This way you can try out a few to see which one suits you best. When you're ready to 'really' install it, many now provide a user-friendly way to do that.

Note, it will not run exactly the same from the LiveCD, since you won't be able to save anything to the CD. But you can use a USB stick and it won't mess with your hard drive.

Here's one that is one of the most user-friendly:

To see what other flavors(distros) are out there, this gives a good rundown:

Re: TROJAN Warning: FBI shutdown of routers may block your net access on March 8

To echo Richard - Linux/Ubuntu is definitely the best alternative. It just works....In fact the hardest thing for me was trying to find out how to do stuff, scratching my head for ages then realizing it was already working - networking being case in point.

You can install it on a hard disc partition so Windows is still there if you ever want to use it.

There is also an option to use a CD to try it out before you install it.

Or you could do a complete install and do away with windows forever.

Re: TROJAN Warning: FBI shutdown of routers may block your net access on March 8

Many people use software (iTunes, Dreamweaver, Windows Games, etc.) that wont run on Linux, in cases like that you can download Ubuntu and run it alongside your current Windows system as a test drive or a permanent solution. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer When you boot up your system will give you a choice of running Windoze or Linux.

If all you are going to do is browse the web, email or use Office (word, excel, etc.) then I strongly recommend downloading the Ubuntu ISO http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download and burning it as a bootable CD, pop it in and restart the computer, once the system boots up from the CD just follow instructions and overwrite the Windo$e system by formatting the drive or partition you intend to install it on first.

Neither one of these are for the feint of heart, you don't need to be a super geek but if you are not technically inclined I suggest asking someone who is to do it for you. An installation guide is here https://help.ubuntu.com/11.10/instal...ide/index.html

Yes, I know that Linux is much better for a lot of reasons. My problem is that there is a lot I do, editing, certain kinds of writing tools and my much beloved email client that do not run on Linux. After this thread I am thinking of trying a dual boot and see how it goes. I really don't want to spend a lot of time these days learning how a new OS works though. Maybe I'll try it out anyway.

    Thanks or the info guys.

Richard... I can not even stress how "satisfied" I am with you behind the wheel. But probably I am totally biased as usual... LOL.

I still have 1 machine that is dual-boot windows and Ubuntu. I only use Windows for assembly programming, but I'm switching that stuff over this year.

If you do dual-boot, you'll be making partitions on your hard drive, and I'd recommend when you do this, make sure you have an additional partition you can access from both OSes. It sucks having to reboot when you need to get 1 file.

Folk should stay well clear of Proprietary software & corporations like Dell, regardless of what alledged free os they have pre-installed (call-home). Folk should always install their own software, there is an amazing Glider community out there that will help you every inch of the way. There is an abundance of man files, Vlogs & tutorials covering everything in one form or another & all for free. So the days of the old excuses are long gone since the Glider community has focused on the beginner (Noob), in fact the questions are now being asked is, how is the alleged truth movement still using Proprietary software or doesn't even know what Proprietary software is?

This is the first I've heard of the glider community. I also think it's up to us to decide to take the time to do this stuff. I personally hate working on a computer vs. using a computer. I think we need to know more about how to get someone else to do this stuff and decide if we can afford to pay them for it. I don't want to work on my pc. I'd rather save up and just buy something ready to go and pay a fee to keep it moving.
