8 Broncos grapplers move to regionals | News, Sports, Jobs

WEST ISHPEMING — Eight wrestlers from Bark River-Harris are heading to the regional Division 4 tournament after placing in the top four of their respective weight classes in the individual district here on Saturday.

Four Broncos were crowned champions, including seniors Avry Corrigan at 112 pounds and Wyatt Raab (160) and juniors Dillon Raab (145) and Drew Allgeyer (189).

Corrigan pinned junior Manistique Dollon Hayes in three minutes and 41 seconds after leading 5-4 early in the second period.

“I knew I had to fight smart” said Corrigan. “I also knew it was going to be a tough game. It definitely gives me some confidence going into next week. I think I proved that I deserved to be the number one seed. It’s going to be tough downstate, but I think we’ll get there. We just have to fight hard and smart.

Dillon Raab hung on for an 8-5 win over Iron Mountain junior Evan Haferkorn.

“I just recovered from a shoulder injury and took my time to come back” said Dillon. “I was going after my opponents instead of waiting for them to come after me. Evan is a very good wrestler. It was a tough match. It’s a big confidence boost, but I can’t be satisfied. I’ll have to bring it back next week.

Wyatt Raab then pinned Charlevoix second Trevor Streeter with three seconds left in the second period.

“I was trying to conserve my energy” Wyatt said. “The first teardown set the tone. Getting the first out helps you throughout the game. He’s a pretty strong boy. At first he was coming towards me, but I mentally knew he was very exhausted by the end.

Allgeyer won by technical fall (17-2) over Ishpeming senior Dawson Delongchamp.

“I focused on my attack and scored as many points as possible,” said Allgeyer. “I knew what to expect and what to expect. It’s another small step on the way. The post-season is just a time to hone your skills and prepare for the state tournament.

BR-H freshman Paul Smith (103) and junior Brenden Siedlecki (112) placed third and second Elliot Corrigan (130) and junior David Mosse (152) took fourth.

Manistic senior Mckabe Swanson reached the 285 final, where he was pinned in 62 seconds by Newberry senior Mathias Miller.

Emeralds junior Jacob Berry (152) was third, and classmate Reece McQuarrie (119), second Michael Bouche (215) and rookie John Weber (103) were fourth.

Senior Spencer Harvala (215) became Westwood’s only champion by pinning Charlevoix sophomore Adam Streeter at 2:38.

“I just kept working hard like I’ve been doing all season,” said Harvala, an All-State (7-8 Division), All-UP (big school) and All-WestPAC Conference selection in football last fall. “I got a bye for the semi-finals and I couldn’t see a lot of wrestlers. Right now, I’m more motivated than anything else.

Senior Jaeger Wilson (130) represented Ishpeming in the winner’s circle after pinning Charlevoix junior Sam Fry in 3:38.

Iron Mountain sophomore Alexander Wilson (103) pinned freshman teammate and defending Mid-Peninsula Conference champion Shayna Wilson at 4:54.

Additional champions for the Mountaineers were senior Isaac Manier (140), Parker Stround (152), junior Shawn McGuire (119) and second Fulton Stroud (171).

Iron Mountain and BR-H face off in the opening round of the team regional on Wednesday, followed by the individual regional on Saturday, both in Charlevoix.

“The regional team must be fun” said Allgeyer. “I think it will go all the way. I know pretty well who is going to be at the individual regional. I’m pretty well prepared for that too. It all comes down to execution. There are no more rollbacks at this point.

Wyatt Raab said he is also looking forward to this week’s fixtures.

“We will have few trips in,” he added. “I’m going to wrestle a friend of mine on the regional team and the number one wrestler in the state in the individual tournament. I’m excited about this.
