LORETTO — Saint Francis University kicker Alex Schmoke, a Bellwood-Antis graduate, was named to the Northeastern Conference preseason first team on Wednesday.

Joining Schmoke in the first team are Red Flash teammates Seth Osborne and Donnell Brown. As a team, the Red Flash were selected to finish third in a pre-season poll by media.

Schmoke, a redshirt sophomore, was a first-team HERO Sports Freshman All-America and All-NEC selection last season. His field goal percentage of 88.2 ranked seventh in the FCS and his 15 total field goals were third in single-season program history. Schmoke had a conference-high 70 points and 47 yards all season. On November 13, he tied a program record in a single game with five baskets converted.

Brown, a redshirt sophomore, was a second-team All-NEC selection in 2021 after ranking tied for second in the conference with four solo sacks and seventh with five overall. He had a team-leading 8.5 tackles for the loss, six quarterback rushes, was fifth with 46 total tackles and added a forced fumble.

Osborne, a redshirt junior, was a second-team All-NEC selection in 2021. He led an offensive line that allowed a conference the third-under 23 sacks last season. He also guided two 100-plus running plays to two separate running backs.

The third-place ranking in the pre-season coaches’ poll is Saint Francis’ highest since being selected for the second time in 2017.

Defending NEC champion Sacred Heart was selected first with five first-place votes, followed by Duquesne who got three first-place votes. Central Connecticut, Merrimack, LIU, Wagner and Stonehill followed Saint Francis in the poll in that order.

The Red Flash enters 2022 having finished 5-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference in the 2021 season. Saint Francis lost all three conference games by a combined five points – 18-17 to Bryant, 14- 13 against Sacred Heart and 24-21 against Central Connecticut.

Last season’s 4-3 conference record was the third time Saint Francis was above .500 in the conference since its inaugural season in 1996. The Red Flash had four seasons at .500 and had a record 5-1 in their 2016 NEC winning season.

Saint Francis opens its season on September 1 in Akron at 6 p.m.
