MOUNT UNION — Mount Union’s huge victory late in the first encounter against Williamsburg was tempered by the efforts of the Blue Pirates in the second match, which was played in doubles at Mount Union on Thursday.

Shared wins were more important for the home team – albeit the side who struck as visitors late in the game – as Mount Union took an early lead and made it a 14-4 win in five innings in the suspended game. But Williamsburg came out on top in its “residence” game, winning 9-8.

“I thought in the first game I thought we hit the ball really well,” said Trojans coach Tim Hicks. “We capitalized on mistakes for them. I was really pleased with how we continued to grind. We kept running errands, got out of that one early. I thought that prepared us, I thought we were going to be ready to play Game 2 – and it just didn’t happen.

In the first game, the Mount Union bats got to work in the second after each team scored in the first.

The Trojans scored six points in the frame and crossed the lineout. Bryce Danish got the ball rolling with a two-run single down the center that scored Ryan Plank and JeSaun Robinson. Then Cameron Donaldson threw a left double that brought home Landon Chrisemer and the Dane. Cainen Atherton singled to center bringing in Donaldson and Blaine Hunsinger to make it 7-1.

Leading 7-3 in the bottom of the third, Ryan Scott hit a single to right center that scored both Chrisemer and Donaldson.

Mount Union added three more runs in the fourth. Dayvon Wilson started with a triple to the center that scored Plank before Wilson crossed after the Dane reached an error. Donaldson went on to single in Danish.

The Trojans added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the 10 run rule.

The Dane was 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Donaldson went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs.

Wilson went in all five innings for Mount Union, striking out seven on the way to victory.

“I thought Dayvon had done a good job” said Hicks. “He had some control issues to start but he put the ball on the plate, he used his defense and they made a few plays behind him. I was happy with the way he threw the ball.

The Trojans struggled to maintain momentum in Game 2 as errors became a major factor with six errors in that game (and nine for the dat).

“The only thing I feel has been our strong point for several years now is the quality of our defence,” said Hicks. “This year, I think our defense is excellent, but something happened. We have to be able to make plays in crucial situations. When it’s 8-0 we make the play, when it’s 5-5 and the green light is there we have to make plays and we just didn’t today.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third where the Blue Pirates scored five runs. The Trojans had two outs and were looking to get out of the inning with the Williamsburg runners at second and third and Lambert Palmer at the plate.

Palmer hit the first of three straight doubles, followed by Dylan Hartman and Dylan Shawver. Shawver scored the fifth point on an error.

Mount Union responded quickly with a five-run inning in the fourth as Denmark hammered the ball into deep center field, scoring three runs. He also crossed for the final run on an error.

Then down 6-5, Mount Union took the lead in the sixth on a Danish single and a two-sack blast from Braylan Knable.

But the Blue Pirates scored three in the bottom half, with the go-ahead scored on a sacrifice fly from Liam McGregor.

The Dane led the Trojans to the plate with a 2-for-3 hat-trick and drove in four runs. Wilson was 2 for 4 with a triple.

“In the second game I thought we weren’t as patient” said Hicks. “I don’t think we waited really well. I thought we get better as the game progresses and you score eights, which should be enough to win a game.

Mount Union (9-2) travels to Penns Valley today.
