EHS softball season ends with regional loss

MOUNT VERNON – Effingham High School saw its season end with a 9-6 loss to host Mount Vernon on Wednesday.

The Rams unleashed their bats, hitting 14 in the contest and overcoming seven errors.

Mount Vernon took a 1-0 lead in the first set and led 3-1 in the second. The Hearts came back with a point in third, but Mount Vernon won the contest with a point in fourth and five more in fifth.

The Hearts attempted a comeback twice with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Abby Cunningham finished with a single, a double and an RBI. Grace Bushue added a brace while Tori Budde contributed two singles. Jennifer Jamison added a single and drove in two runs while Mya Harvey had a single and an RBI.

Gillespie Class 2A Sectional

Newton held a 1-0 lead late in the third set against Freeburg, but the rains came and halted play on Wednesday.

Play will resume today, again, weather permitting.

If the Eagles win, they will advance to the championship game on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Gillespie. Gillespie beat Breese Mater Dei, 2-0 on Tuesday.
