Nebraska law enforcement is investigating the death of a skydiver

One person died and another was injured after a skydiving accident Thursday at an airport in Nebraska, authorities said. The Crete Police Department said the crash happened at Crete Municipal Airport. Crete, which is in Saline County, about 25 miles southwest of Lincoln. Officials said Romulo Suarez, 56, an experienced skydiver, was taken to Bryan West Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The second paratrooper was taken to Crete Region Medical Center where he was pronounced dead – police are not releasing his name at this time. Investigators said witnesses reported seeing two skydivers attempt a “tandem” jump, followed by deployment and operation of the parachute. Police said the couple did not slow their descent sufficiently as they approached the ground, for unknown reasons. The Cretan Police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
