NEW ULM – New Ulm VFW Gold qualified for Sunday’s championship round of the Junior Upper Midwest Classic with two wins on Saturday.
New Ulm shut out Hastings 2-0 in their opener before beating Excelsior 7-1 on the night.
New pitcher Ulm VFW Gold has allowed just two runs in four tournament games.
VFW Gold now plays Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. against a team to be determined.
In Game 1, southpaw Zach Paszkiewicz limited Hastings to just two hits while striking out four.
Cody Serbus had two hits for New Ulm.
VFW Gold scored a run in the fourth when Serbus led off with a triple and scored on a single from Ethan Thompson.
Gold pushed a run in the fifth when Zach Riederer singled outfield and slipped to second. He took third on a passed ball and scored on a Logan Mielke single.
In the nightcap, New Ulm scored four runs late in the second, then added four more in the fourth to claim a 7-1 win.
Logan Mielke won the full match for New Ulm. He withdrew six.
Alex Bartholomew suffered the loss for Excelsior, who blocked 12 runners on base.
Matt Seidl had three hits for New Ulm and drove in two runs. Kayden Larson added two hits.
New Ulm scored four runs in the second on a Larson single, a walk and an error. A pitch from Parker Kamm scored a point before a wild pitch made it 2-0.
A two-run single from Matt Seidl made it 4-0.
VFW Gold added three runs in the fourth on a Seidl single, an error, two wild pitches and a Larson RBI single and ensuing error.
