BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Levi Williams ran 200 yards and four touchdowns and had 127 yards and one touchdown to lead Wyoming to a 52-38 victory over Kent State on Tuesday in the famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Williams, who set a career best performance in a rushing game, tied the Potato Bowl record for most rushing touchdowns and was named MVP of the game.
Kent State (7-7). .
Wyoming (7-6) scored 21 straight points to start the second half, including 27 and 80-yard runs by Williams, to build a 42-24 lead that proved too difficult for Kent State.
Wyoming senior linebacker Chad Muma and Butkus Award finalist didn’t disappoint in his last college game, leading the Cowboys in defense with 13 and a half tackles.
The Cowboys set the Potato Bowl team’s rushing record with 404 yards, while the two teams combined for 723 rushing yards, also a Potato Bowl record.
Wyoming: The Cowboys quarterback has been a standoff between Sean Chambers and Williams over the past two seasons. But Williams, who was named a starter in the middle of the season, will have a stranglehold on the post ahead of the spring testing.
Kent State: The Golden Flashes had no problem moving the ball, racking up 656 yards of attack. However, after keeping Wyoming 216 yards of attack in the first half, Kent State’s defense withered in the second half, being pushed around by a much more physical Wyoming offensive line.
Kent State: Fourth-year coach Sean Lewis returns most of the offensive pieces next season needed to accomplish something the Golden Flashes haven’t done since the 1950s – go four straight years without a losing season. Point guard Marquez Cooper and top receiver Dante Cephas, who have totaled 2,294 yards of attack this year, will return for their junior seasons. Collin Schllee is expected to take over as quarterback after senior Dustin Crum runs out of eligibility. Defense presents a greater challenge for Lewis, who only sacks four players but includes main tackle Dean Clark.
Wyoming: As Craig Bohl kicks off his ninth season in Wyoming, he’ll have to whip up an almost entirely new offensive line with just one returning starter. But his defensive unit returns eight starters, but will have a huge hole to fill with Muma’s departure.
Wyoming will open next season in Illinois on August 27.
Kent State opens its 2022 campaign in Washington on September 3.
